The Excelsior Lady Eagles (4-4) beat the AAE Knights on Tuesday night by a score of 59-37 giving them an early lead in league standings at 1-0. The Eagles defense proved to be too much for the Knights, as the full court press enabled the Eagles to speed up the game and score early and often off of turnovers. The Eagles went into halftime with a 37-16 lead and would finish the game with 9 steals.
Louiana Salazar led the defense in steals with 7 and also managed to accumulate 7 assists on the night. Salazar also scored 6 points as she guided the offense for most of the game.
The Knights had no answer for Katie Bevan, who was on fire from the field going 17-30 with 34 points. Bevan scored 12 of her 34 points in the 2nd quarter alone and had racked up 24 by the half. Bevan also had 3 rebounds and an assist to go along with her points scored.
Kory Washington led the Eagles in rebounds with 11 and was also the second leading scorer in the game with 8 points.
Sarah Humphrey scored 5 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, and made 1 block in the paint. Sarah's excellent defense kept AAE out of the paint for most of the competition, and her speed proved to be too much in the press as evidenced by her 2 steals.
Keeping in tune with excellent defense, Renee D'Espyne played shutdown defense on AAE's best shooter, indicating just what the D in her name stands for. D'Espyne held her to only a couple of shots throughout the time she was guarding her, blocking one with extreme prejudice. On top of her excellent D, D'Espyne scored 2 points on the night.
Courtney Sillings also played aggressive defense on the night as well as setting screens to allow the Eagles offense to get open.
Cheltzie Brumett also played shutdown defense and also scored 4 points on the night. She had 1 crucial block in the paint, and also helped pressure AAE into making turnovers throughout the game.
Angie Dionne had 1 offensive rebound late in the game.
Alex Rueger had 1 block in the paint in the 4th quarter, preserving the Excelsior lead.
